Every camera system has a blind spot. That’s not a knock on your setup — it’s just how it goes. Cameras have edges, walls block sightlines, and the moment you add a new door, a new dumpster, or a new delivery route, you’ve potentially created a gap that didn’t exist when the system was installed. The question isn’t whether a blind spot exists. It’s whether you know where it is before someone else finds it first, and how to protect it.
Overlap isn’t always the answer
The instinctive fix is to add more cameras until every inch is covered twice over. And to be fair, overlap has real value — if one camera’s view gets blocked by a parked truck or a branch, a second angle can still catch what happened. But chasing 100% overlap gets expensive fast, and past a certain point you’re paying for redundancy that never gets used. Most businesses don’t need zero blind spots. They need to know exactly where their blind spots are, and make sure those spots aren’t sitting next to something worth stealing.
That’s a risk assessment, not a shopping list. And it starts outside, not in your dashboard.
Scout your own entrances and choke points
The most useful thing you can do with your security budget this month probably isn’t a new camera — it’s twenty minutes outside, after dark, looking at your building the way someone casing it would.
Start at the entrances. Every door, gate, and loading dock is a decision point for someone testing whether your building is worth the risk. Stand at each one and ask: is this clearly covered, clearly visible, and clearly lit? If the answer is no to any of those, that entrance is quietly telling people it’s the easier option. Adding outdoor lighting, a “recording in progress” sign, or any other form of deterrence is also a great option here.
Then move to choke points — the narrow spots everyone has to pass through, like a single side gate, a stairwell, or the gap between two buildings. These matter more than wide-open spaces, because a camera at a choke point gets a close, usable, identifiable shot, instead of a wide shot of someone small in the distance. If you only have budget for a few well-placed cameras, choke points are where they earn their keep.
Make the coverage visible, not just present
Once you know your blind spots and you’ve prioritized coverage at entrances and choke points, there’s one more layer that does a lot of quiet work: letting people know they’re being watched.

A full risk assessment doesn’t have to be complicated:
- Walk the perimeter — not the app, the actual building — and note every entrance and choke point.
- Check for blind spots at each one, and be honest about which ones are actually acceptable versus which ones are sitting next to something valuable.
- Prioritize choke points and entrances over open, low-risk areas when deciding where new cameras go.
- Add visibility, like an awareness monitor, at your highest-traffic entrances to make your coverage impossible to ignore.
- Repeat the walk every few months — buildings change, and blind spots have a way of showing up quietly.
